In Senegal the government has pledged to provide food aid to 1 million families affected by Covid-19.
Each household will receive food packages consisting of 10 kilograms of rice, 10 kilograms of sugar, 10 litres of oil and 18 pieces of soap. The estimated price of each package is US$ 109. By supporting households the government believes they will reach approximately 8-10 million people.

In Senegal, a TV soap opera called “The Virus” shows the daily life in pandemic in the Wolof language.
The miniseries aims to raise awareness about the health and hygiene-related topics. It is broadcasted in episodes of between 4 and 8 minutes on the ITV television channel and at Marodi TV on Youtube since late April. The film director is Mohamed Mustapha Kanté.

Non-profit delivers masks for the vulnerable in Africa and gives jobs to local tailors
A non-profit organisation African Masks distributes cloth masks in several countries across Africa. While some governments introduced compulsory mask-wearing, many impoverished communities cannot afford a mask. Teams of African Masks volunteers distribute masks to the most vulnerable and populated communities in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Senegal, Kenya, Benin and Nigeria.

In Senegal, the government launched an economic and social resilience program based on four fundamental pillars.
The program will have a CFAF 1,000 billion (€1,5 billion) budget, according to the International Labour Organization, and it will focus on four areas: supporting the health sector; strengthening the social resilience of populations; protecting the private sector and an economic and social recovery program.

Former President of Chad was granted two months’ leave from prison during the pandemic.
Hissène Habré, who served as the President of the country from 1982 until 1990, was serving a life sentence for crimes against humanity in a prison in Senegal. In 2016, he was found guilty by a of human-rights abuses, sexual slavery and ordering the killing of an estimated 40,000 people.

Senegal has developed $1 coronavirus test kits and $60 ventilators.
Senegal’s Institut Pasteur de Dakar has developed a Covid-19 testing kit that costs $1 and can deliver results in about 10 minutes. The institute was able to achieve this by drawing from a wealth of experience gathered from developing vaccines and treatments for several ailments including yellow fever and dengue.…
